Intersting Fact:

The Great Egret almost disappeared due to the fact that their plumes were so widely used to decorate hats in the early 20th century.  An ounce of Great Egret feathers cost as much as $32 which was more than an ounce of gold at the time.  Some of the first conservation legislation in North America was enacted to outlaw hunting of Great Egrets.  The Great Egret is the symbol for the National Audubon Society, one of the oldest conservation organizations in the US.  (Information is from Birds of Minnesota and Wisconsin, published by Lone Pine.)
