Eagle 045We are really lucky, the eagle stop here often.  Eagle 052Lately we have been visited by a Golden Eagle as well, but he has proven to be much more elusive.  The Bald Eagle was recently seen catching a fish out of our pond.   I never tire of watching these beautiful birds.   This one put me over a half hour behind schedule, but it was well worth it!

The signs are everywhere, fall is on its way.   The geese have begun to gather, some of the leaves are already beginning to turn and Gracie’s getting into shape.  Gracie spends her fall months at ScatterGun Lodge in South Dakota – the Ultimate in Pheasant Hunting. Intersting Fact:

The Great Egret almost disappeared due to the fact that their plumes were so widely used to decorate hats in the early 20th century.  An ounce of Great Egret feathers cost as much as $32 which was more than an ounce of gold at the time.  Some of the first conservation legislation in North America was enacted to outlaw hunting of Great Egrets.  The Great Egret is the symbol for the National Audubon Society, one of the oldest conservation organizations in the US.  (Information is from Birds of Minnesota and Wisconsin, published by Lone Pine.)

This is the nest of a Killdeer

The Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) is a medium-sized plover.

I noticed it yesterday while mowing the pasture.  Mama bird was doing the broken wing act, but she let me get pretty close with the tractor and never left her nest.  I went back today to get her picture, but she was away from the nest trying her best to lure me away.  I got as close as I dared to take these photos, but don’t worry, I didn’t touch them.  Aren’t they pretty?
